AT 12:45 PM on July 18, 1939, Coast Guard aircraft V-147, a Grumman JF-2 Duck searching for an errant barge, struck a beacon in the Amelia River and crashed in full view of the Coast Guard patrol boat 186. Pilot Fred Schweining was drowned, despite every effort to extricate him from the sunken wreckage by the plane’s mechanic, Frank Dryden, who, while he was injured, submerged himself several times in an effort to rescue Schweining.
